Here is one family’s story.

Nina's Story

Nina came to My Sisters’ House after leaving an abusive husband and living in a domestic crisis center for 30 days. Although she worked full time, her credit had been severely damaged by her husband, who controlled all of the bills and bank accounts. Nina had never lived on her own; moving to her husband’s home from her parent’s home when they married. Early in her marriage, both parents passed away leaving Nina to become very dependent on her husband. When Nina initially came to My Sisters’ House, she said she couldn’t begin to imagine living in an apartment of her own.

While at My Sisters’ House, Nina completed the life skills curriculum series and learned of the many resources in our community available to assist her and her new-found independence. In meetings with her case manager, Nina worked intensely on budgeting skills and how to manage a bank account. And, she worked, tirelessly, on developing her self esteem. Nina attended weekly counseling sessions with a therapist, who helped her make peace with many deep-seated, underlying issues.

Nina flourished

She graduated from the program at My Sisters’ House, paid off all of her creditors and built up a small savings account. In no time, she began to look into living on her own, in her own home through Habitat for Humanity.

With lots of support and encouragement, she completed the process of building her own home through Habitat for Humanity. In the winter of 2007, Nina enjoyed the holidays in her very own home, that was all her own.
